Work on major improvements to the west side of Clacton Pier is continuing to make steady progress.
The latest project as part of an overall masterplan is to lay new roofing costing tens of thousands of pounds over that section of the structure.
Contractors are well into the scheme which is expected to be completed this week and is necessary to fully weather-proof and insulate the attractions below.
As part of the plan the Boardwalk Bar and Grill has already received a £130,000 facelift and in the summer new modern staff offices were created above, along with a meeting room and reception area.
The roof over the new offices was replaced and now it is the turn of the rest of the roof coverings on the west side.
Director Billy Ball explained that it has been decided to carry out the work on a piecemeal basis, rather than in one go, as it would not involve having to close down that entire section of the pier.
“In 2018 we carried out a multi-million pound revamp of the east side and it had a significant impact on the operation as a large amount of space was out of action for a period of time,” he said.
“The scheme on the other side will be undertaken in stages and will happen over a number of years rather than months – and largely without disruption.
“At the end of the programme the west side will be brought up to the very high standards of the east side; it will just take us a bit longer to get there.”
The ongoing improvements will also include an enhanced arcade workshop space, a goods in area for the amusements prize stores, an improved service compound, enhanced staff room facilities and waste management area.
“This is all part of our ongoing commitment to continuing to upgrade the attraction and safeguard it for future generations to enjoy,” added Mr Ball.
“We have learnt from our 15 plus years of owning the pier that its evolution is vital to keep people’s interest and see them returning year after year. It is all part of our success story and will definitely continue.”
