Children taking part in a construction event at Clacton Library had a special flying visit from Sidney the Seagull.

Around 20 youngsters attended the session organised by staff to build a model of Clacton Pier in just two hours using a range of materials.

It was one of a number of regular events being put on at the library during half terms – and more are to follow.

Manager Michele Price said she was delighted with the turnout, as well the visit from Sidney, the Pier’s mascot.

“The whole idea was to get children actively working together to create a model of a building which is important to the town’s history and which means something to them,” she said.

“The Clacton Historical Society also put on a display of photos and information about the Pier and parents and grandparents joined in with the model making.

“It was a real team effort and everyone had a great time.”

Nigel Brown, Clacton Pier’s Communications Manager who also went along to the event, said it was amazing to see what could be achieved in such a short time.

“The basic structure came together very quickly and then the children and their helpers created the various rides and made the whole thing come to life,” he added.

“The Pier is keen to get involved in the community and we hope to do more with Clacton Library in the future.

“Sidney the Seagull definitely gave his approval and posed for photos with the children – and the library staff!”
